Barriers
No one likes to be put downNo insult is too small
When you're hurt, treated like dirt
You might construct a wall
A wall that protects you from
The sticks and stones some throw
Build a wall that's thick and tall
That can withstand each blow
I've been hypersensitive
To their perceived attacks
How can I ever forgive
Their awful, sinful acts?
I don't want to hurt again
People can be unkind
Some people like to play games
On my once fragile mind
Maybe it's our DNA
And we're all the carriers
Of those who build mental walls
And those who build barriers
We should all protect ourselves
But have we gone too far?
If our walls block everything
Wouldn't that be bizarre?
When the world treats you badly
It helps to have thick skin
Why do I keep building walls
When I should let you in?
Everyone is not a fiend
Who I need to avoid
Building all these barriers
Made me seem paranoid
I'm willing to let some in
My friends and family
Some barriers that I built
Simply weren't meant for me
