Tried to Live
When you reach the end
will you ascend with a trumpet call ?
or will you plead the fifth
as you will in all probability fall ?
Not a saint
tried to live a life
that wouldn't make the self righteous faint
but all he's got to show for it
are boxes of alternative music
from cassettes to compact discs
groups you've never even heard
tiptoeing the line of the absurd
Don't think he'll be able to
dance right into heaven
Don't want to be judged
life amounts to an insignificant smudge
a suicide fly on a windscreen
always living beyond the means
Walking this line
another trial of tears
male after male
mirroring the reflection of societal fears
NYC in 1983
all these beautiful people
whose lives ended horribly
This time frame is all but forgotten
and the newest generation
is crystal rotten
Relationships end
strained beyond the bend
but some of us are destined to be alone
So don't tell me how we all make are own reality
Surrounded by highways and countless towns
this loneliness holds steadfast to the ground
cars rush by as he walks by the side
wandering eyes can only pry
feeling dried up completely inside
even the drivel has shriveled
Looking back to blacker times
lost in the present with another lament
here's to future days
strangely convinced he'll have more to say
