    Poem Commentary

    Remembering Matthew Sheppard with an internet day of silence is not doing enough to stop the mentality that caused this tragedy in the first place.

    Remaining Silent

    A day of silence,
    what does this accomplish?
    there are still acts of violence
    being committed everywhere

    No brooch or ribbon
    pinned to this chest
    nothing will bring them back
    self righteous society poised to attack

    Kill them with kindness,
    benefiting from a few choice words
    choosing to remain silent is blindness
    nothing will ever occur

    People still see a freak show
    spreading false information
    from supposed experts, 'in the know',
    all this drama just leaves me quite cold

    Still perceived as walking characters
    like limp wrist-ed queens,
    and don't we all fall into the trap
    of extremist leather scenes?

    These hypercritical people on the right
    who spit upon our very names
    even our own loving families
    turn sour with ill-will and blame

    Words kill self esteem
    violent actions reduce one to a machine
    surviving as an unfeeling animal,
    this pack mentality is quite damnable
