After Midnight
Drinking coffee after midnight
bouncing off the walls
behind a locked door
giving into this muse once more
It only attempts to confuse
to rile me up
and light the fuse
burning up the night
These semis on the thruway
accelerating and drifting
head lights carving up
dark shadows and fence lines
In this over heated room
in thread bare underwear
slouching back
rocking this wooden chair
Feeling the cold beneath
a hard unfinished floor
semi frozen packed earth
a repository for forgotten work
Waiting for this screen
to flicker and freeze
maybe another evening
without electricity
Flashing lights reflected
through curtained windows
utility trucks racing
down this semi rural street
Here comes yet another outage
more like another outrage
this cell phone light
lighting up the door
Subdued pace after midnight
the people upstairs
having yet another fight,
out the window I stare
