To Right a Poem
To write a poem that weaves the contrary truths into a tapestry;
To write a poem that paints the stars sequined to a stark dark sky—
The soul must feel deep love and kinship for time’s poetry;
The heart must love the light even in flight, and love the life that is born to die.
To write a living poem, you have to know how to ask the heart;
You also need to know how to ask the mind and even the brain.
To write a poem of life, you have to know when and where to start.
You need to feel the proper measure of pleasure and pain;
The pleading proportions of joy and sorrow;
The taste of today, and the teeth of tomorrow;
The sun-streaking mornings that rise, and the moonless nights that drop.
And you have to know where and when to stop.
