Live Spelled Backwards
It is so sad. Even dogs can get cancer.
I’m hearing now about a happy, loving dog
That has been diagnosed with malignant tumors.
Just as in the case of people, especially children,
There is no real answer
To the question why love and loyalty must suffer so.
It is all a fog
Why innocence ever has to die in pain.
All the self-presented iron-clad explanations
Seem like unsubstantiated rumors,
Beside the tear-filled eyes of a suffering child,
Or the pain-filled eyes of a trusting dog.
Now I find
My life and my bright mind
Threatened by the monster that eats us alive.
I feel so sad and sorrowful for all that I shall lose;
I feel great fear of the cold darkness that shall freeze my future.
But mostly, as so many centuries of suffering and death crush me to recall,
I weep under the weight of why, and I pity us all.
