Ameliorator
When people are mean and cruel,
Or callous and cold,
I recall how kind and good you are.
Then like a sunlit jewel,
My memories of you unfold—
To give me light in the dark of night like a bright new star.

When time, that used to give,
Turns back to take away,
I dream of the gifts from you that will last for life.
When my hours seem harsh and painful to live,
I luxuriate in the wonderful words I have heard you say;
And I dream all the dreams of joy you sparked for me, to soothe the sorrowed strife.

When heaven seems hard-hearted, so aloof above,
I think of you as the angel I finally found;
And even hell, if it ruthlessly waits, must grant your grace.
I plucked the rose, and tossed the thorns to the ground:
I found the fire and light of mortal love in your form and face.
I had the heat of heaven in your sight and sound.
You made everything better; for you were an angel of love.
