Death in Life
"For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so arethe sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.”
–Ecclesiastes 9:12
I had thought I understood that I must die someday.
But now I know I never really knew.
It was just meaningless words to say so.
But now I really know.
You probably think that you know, too.
But you won’t know your death is real,
Until and unless you feel
The grip of death in pre-death grief, fear, regret, and sorrow,
Such as I now feel.
Nothing forces death down your throat like getting cancer.
Advanced cancer, with little or no chance of cure.
Advanced cancer, with a large likelihood of slow dying, in terrible pain.
Then death has invaded life,
And pervaded the slipping time—
Drenching today with the bitter taste of no tomorrow.
