Stone Cry
I've seen my happiness turn into smoke.
I've seen my sorrows melt away like snow.
Oh, long ago, to time's strong truth I woke:
That everything that comes to be must go.
Why, then, am I surprised, and feel despair,
To hear your smiling speech as you pass by?
To see the light shine sweet upon your hair?
To catch the you that sparkles in each eye?
Unseeing was my heart, though my eyes saw.
All deaf was my deep soul to sounds of wings.
No facts too hard to eat for my mind's maw,
Nor secrets; but sweet sad mortal things
Felt eternal in my love of you;
How sad to see that you have left me, too.
