Poem Commentary

Inspired by the performance of "What if I am a Black Woman" by a wonderful fellow poet named Minnie. Often times, I have seen family members criticize each other for weight gain or something about their physical appearance that has changed. We should learn to stop putting folks down for what they look like physically and start loving them for who they really are.

Originality

No excuses anymore!
I won't change it, hide it-
No plastic or cosmetic surgery required,
Or Breast implants or reductions,
No need for useless introductions to
A world that will never understand
What I look like on the inside...

And who are you to ask me
If I have gained weight? Does my
Weight determine the weight of my
Heart or my size bar me from all
The wonderful things He has in store
For me? Are you too blind to open
Your eyes and see that all these things
Don't even matter in the grand
Scheme of things because every part of
Me is a sexy string of confidence
That no one could ever live up to!

I don't care if you are a size 2 or 20-
Whether you live in a big house
Or a hole in the wall- Be Bold,
Proud of who you really are because
No body can tell you who you should
Be, what you should look like,
What you should do with your life,
What goals you should have, what
Dreams that inspire you to be
What you desire to be-All you have to
Do is follow the revolution that
Was started long ago- To say no
To fake, outward appearances and say
Yes to what He says you are!
You are beautiful in every way
Just the way you are....
