Poem Commentary

Life in a simpler time.

Passing Time

Do you recall precious memories,
from far back in your past?
When left alone in solitude
do these memories amass?

Slowly one by one,
they filter out from their abode,
Retrieved now from your memory bank
in individual episodes.

As the veil is slowly lifted
do these images appear,
And bring a smile to your lips
as childhood sounds you hear?

The solitary drone
of a lone Cessna overhead,
That captures your attention
as your eyes are skyward led,

While lying on your back
in the cool shade of a tree,
On a folding canvas lounge chair
avoiding the summer’s heat?

Or from that same position
do you hear the whistle’s call,
Far off alerting motorists
to yield the cross gates fall?

As the train draws ever closer
the tell tale click clack sound resounds,
As you await its grand crescendo
whistles flail while the earth it pounds.

Or maybe jumping to your feet
and running toward the street,
To beat the other neighbor kids
and be the first in line to greet,

Those jingling bell’s and smile
and cold treats from friendly hands,
Known universally to all
our own Good Humor man.

But these were from a time
before A/C took it’s hold,
Before kids were shut inside the house
and windows all were closed,

And games were played outside without
the benefit of sound,
Except for peals of laughter
from the children all around,

Who used imagination
to entertain themselves at length,
And instead of playing all alone
joined in with other’s ranks,

And bonded and built friendships
that lasted through the years,
Who’s memories we can now recall
and are so very dear.

Thanks! Now I have to write my Mom a letter! How times have changed. It just doesn't seem so simple anymore, does it?

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
