The Greater The Hurt/The Bigger The Smile
There is a lady I’ve known for quite a while
I’ve never seen without a transfixed smile
Once confided in me that I never knew
The smile masked pain she suffered through
Strict father, and an uncommunicative mother
Nameless young men who pretended to love her.
Starting when hardly more than a child
To hide troubles and woes, she learned to smile
In a passionate moment she had before
Found her in trouble which hurt even more
Dad gave her a choice to make on her own
Give her child up or find another home
Though it wasn’t easy she continued to smile
In the face of castigation she gave up her child
It’s been years since she was a young lady
Whatever the reason never had another baby
An older lady now, never mentions her child
Last time I saw her she still wore that smile
