Wondering
I wonder how the clouds
can disappear from view.
Then suddenly reappear
covering the sky like giant shrouds.
I wonder if love is real
and why we anguish so.
Searching and searching on
in pursuit of the beau ideal.
I wonder why poets write rhymes
using words as their tools.
In pursuit of the perfect poem
rewritten a thousand times.
I wonder why man seeks gold
Instead of life’s precious things.
The lessons of greed are history
The fate of the miser foretold.
I wonder if the human race
will someday find its way.
Or continue its destructive path
and vanish without a trace.
I wonder if death is forever
an end to one’s existence.
Or might there be a heaven like place
beyond the twelfth of never.
To wonder is to seek that what might otherwise elude you.
To question is to take the first step toward discovery.
