Birthday Kite
Last week was my birthday
Now I am five
I didn't get a pony
Or even a puppy
I got a new dress
it's white with pink flowers
and some hair bows to match
I got a baby doll that talks
some coloring books
and a big box of crayons
I really would have liked a pony
but dad said they eat too much
My grandma bought me some socks
and kitty cat pajamas
Aunt Susie and Uncle Jack bought me some puzzles
and a shiny pink piggy bank
I really would have liked a puppy
but mom said they chew too much
Grandpa gave me a piece of cloth
with sticks holding it together,
a really long tail and some string
Grandpa said it was a kite
and when he took me to the park
we'd watch it take flight
I wondered how it would fly
it had no motor
and had no feathers
But grandpa had said
all we needed was wind
I got up early next Saturday morning
put on my new dress
had my momma put up my hair
and waited for grandpa
to take me to the park
Grandpa said to lay the kite down
right in the middle of the field
and slowly unravel the string
I kept walking
kept unraveling the string
but nothing happened to the kite
Grandpa smiled and said "wait"
"Be patient silly goose"
"Be patient"
I felt a tiny breeze ruffle my dress
then I heard grandpa laugh
and he told me to run
I ran,
and felt the string pull
I looked back at the kite
but it was no longer on the ground
It was stretching, reaching for the sky
It was swooping, swirling
Dancing just for me
It was flipping, turning
circling, bouncing
Racing the birds
I giggled and smiled
faster and faster I ran
My kite touched the clouds
flew over the trees
And then it stopped
A really big tree
grabbed my kite's tail
and wouldn't let go
I pulled on the string
with all my might
but that mean ole tree
just wouldn't let go
If mom would have bought me a puppy
It could've chewed off my kite's tail
And I'd still be watching my kite
Dancing in the clouds
And racing with the birds
