Night on the Farm
Some ‘ole tune croons from the 'ole radio..
Crazy…crazy for thinking…
Candles flicker darkly amidst cornered spaces
Bare toes sachet across creaky timber
Outside a lone bird bellows his haunting song
The air crackles as a distant storm approaches
Faint smells of aqua fill the atmosphere
A rustle of leaves stir along the overhang
The heavens turn angry, clouds erupt, splintering the sky
Mammoth drops pursue as if chasing the veil away
Clattering, crashing, the downpour, spouts and spurts on the ‘ole tin roof
Swirling off gutters, into pails and waterbearers, all
As quickly as it swells, the tempest settles out
Quirky rodents dart in and out of secret passages
‘Ole farm cat perks up on the porch rail
Geese squawk along the terrace path behind
