A Better Life
I see you standing there
A smile on your face, yet worry in your eyes.
I can see my future in those eyes,
and you can see your past in mine.
There is a little twinkle there that says,
“ We're going to be free!”
I'm here writing this poem
all because of the things you did for us
Now there won't be any things to dream and wish for
We have already found it,
and we owe it all to you.
When I look in your eyes, I can see your story.
You don't have to say a word,
because you have already said it all.
Somehow I know exactly how you felt
looking into the eyes of the other men.
You saw people that would rather die
so that you could come home to your family.
They step up and risk their life, just like you did,
so everyone could have a better life.
As I look up at this flag folded up in a case,
I think of you
and how you made this world
a better place.
