Chief Joseph
Chief Joseph
With no blankets
our children freeze.
Lacking food
death takes many.
Traveling far from
the broken treaties
still brings upon us
constant attacks.
I thought more
of the white man,
who sees our wanting
to stay on our land
as an act of war.
We can’t win
having lost the land
where our Mothers
and Fathers
lived and died.
We will know no peace
for blowing in the wind
the sins of the white man’s
lies like lightning
striking across the sky.
We can’t win
over the white man
for he is stronger
than us, possessing
great hate in his heart.
We will go to our graves
as slaves.
“My heart is sick and sad,
from where the sun
now stands, I’ll
fight no more forever.”
