All day in the desert
All day in the desert
You awake wanting to do
something hot,
where your sweat
is pulled from your body,
cooling you off.
You want to hug
the towering shadows of
the Saguaro Cactus
standing strong against
the silhouette
of the dawning of day.
You want to trek
down this roadless
backcountry wilderness
just us two,
having our hats on,
sunscreen on,
with plenty of water
to shield us from the sun.
You want to go
off road, away from time,
where roadrunners
dash after
lazy lizards awoken
from sunbathing
atop of orange-tan rocks.
You want to witness
hovering hummingbirds
fly above
the bright violet flowers
of a hedgehog cactus as
if in love in early spring.
You want to feel
the rough texture of
the drawn Petroglyphs
on massive boulders,
telling of a time
when natives ran wild
over this land.
You want to hear
the screech owl’s hoot
as dusk descends.
You want to be
in awe of the silhouette
of the enormous cactus
in the setting sun,
then you want to go
home, just us two..
