Taylor
I followed behind, quicklyto make sure he didn't fall in.
Before his light-up Spiderman shoes
even touched the water,
a helpless toad caught his attention
and he ran after it.
I smiled and watched him go about
when I heard Grandma say something.
I caught her in the corner of my eye,
sitting in a pale green lawn chair,
smoking with Pa.
"But you know,"
she continued,
"He could be good for her."
Pa scratched at the gray stubble on his chin
and grunted.
It was then that I discovered
they were talking about you.
I smiled and scooped up Taylor,
promising him ice cream after dinner.
He smiled with glee, holding the toad
in his small hands.
