Wretched
The burden of me,
I took from your shoulders.
My love weighed you down,
like rough, jagged boulders.
May thoughts of me
not mar your day.
Please walk in the light,
I'll turn away.
Sleep well and eat well,
keep warm in the cold.
I'll keep my distance
without being told.
When you're weary and sick,
I'll call your new lover.
She'll hold you and love you,
and promise forever.
How wretched to think
my dark needs shocked you.
My pain-seeking freedom
scared you and broke you.
I do not love like this to be unique.
I was made so and cannot change.
My love is heavy, I understand.
It's difficult and twisted and strange.
But love is love whatever the hue.
Dark as it was, it was pure and true.
I knelt to worship at your pew,
but like a bird, you turned and flew.
I think of you everday.
And wonder if you smiled today.
May she keep thoughts of me at bay,
like the sun keeps the dark away.
