somewhere between somewhere and somewhere
El Paso to Tucson
one hand holding the wheel
the other the letter
that ended our deal
Tucson to L.A.
Tearing into pieces
a past
that was never real
the wind takes the words out of the window
I watch them briefly
from the side mirror
leaving them
to die
somewhere in the Arizona desert
I look at your picture
one last time
and then
like falling leaves it twist behind me
our words into the desert wind
perhaps someone will find a tattered piece
of a small puzzle
and briefly wonder about someone else’s dreams
I just drive
to somewhere I’ve never been
somewhere that I won’t know
until I get there
somewhere between somewhere and somewhere
somewhere between
Fort Worth and forever
