Poem Commentary

i wrote this poem for my uncle that passed in july 3, 2004. he was like a father to me and i was the daughter he never had. he loved trains so i wrote this so he knows that we still love him.

R.I.P. uncle we love you and always will

Next Stop.....The Light

The train of life

has just

chugged by

having you, uncle, as a passenger

to the light.

You will be

waiting for us at

the station.

Always looking

and waiting but never

wanting that train

to come.

You loved trains

and now you

get taken away

by one.

You never want us

to leave the first station

but you can't wait

for the train

to arrive

and to say

welcome home”

to everyone

as they arrive

one by one

at the “light” station.

First, I am sorry for your loss. The poem is a wonderful and hopeful dealing with what none will escape. As your uncle waits for you my son waits for me.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
