Had you remained a friend
Had you remained a friend
I could sleep nights, now that you are gone.
If you had remained a friend
I could look you full in the eyes
when we meet, without being
ashamed of the love and tenderness
I know you see in mine.
Had you remained only a friend,
the awful emptiness would have
quickly filled, and the terrible ache
would have passed.
But you were more than friend, Beloved,
and the tears sting bitterly,
and the taste of salt is strong
upon my lips.
