So What Exactly is Christmas Supposed to Be About, Anyway?
I heard that this "Christmas"
is coming again
Does this mean time for
Family and Friends?
Or does Christmas mean gifts
For which I have no use
Tell me, for I
Just need a few clues
That are needed to navigate
Through this fine season
If I must learn it
Than give me one reason
Why I should use dollars that
Could be better spent
To buy all my groceries
And pay for my rent.
You say it's important
To cut down a tree
Since the forest has plenty
But it's bare ground I see
You tell me the economy
Has taken a dive
So deep under water
We're barely alive
So tell me again,
I'll listen my friend
I never would want this
"Tradition" to end.
Could it be different
Just for this year?
Find other ways
to bring holiday cheer?
Might there be caroling
Soon after dark
And maybe no lights strung
In our city park
Maybe this year Santa
Stays home
Instead of all families
Taking out loans
Maybe the trees could stand
For just one more year
To be healthy and royal
And bring us good cheer
Perhaps we use candles
instead of false light
To gather around and
Tell stories all night
And when Christmas is over
I wonder if we
Will remember to reach out
To all that do plea
For canned goods and clothing
And places to live
A job to go back to
would be something to give
The meaning of Christmas
Extends through the year
So let's not pretend
And stear ourselves clear
Of all the fine deeds
That await to be done
That's makes what Christmas
Incredibly fun.
