    • What a year...and it keeps getting better...

    The First Birthday

    The First Birthday

Lights aglow atop the birthday cake
"Happy Birthday to you" they all sing
Walking towards me with a purple cake
A present for me, a white gold pearl ring

    Balloons, candles, presents and family
The stage is set for our fun
Is it really possible that this is all true
All of this happening to the one

A grown up child turning forty years old
Years of longing, always needing the love
Of my family close and surrounding me
This year's gift is from Heaven above

The grown up child is almost, it seems, pensive in receiving this birthday cake as if there is some disbelief that this is happening. Along the way we get gifts, "a white gold pearl ring" and you see the grown up child blossoming at the end with some measure of glee.

Made me wish it was my birthday so I could have my very first birthday party. This year's gift, life. Continue to write and I will be you faithful reader.

when i read this poem in my head. i had a rejoicing feel to. being happy and in love and surrounding by everything good. i love the attitude with it too. like a vanity in it. i loved it.

Wow. Love the emotion and the image it sets. I love reading stuff like this, makes me all warm and gooey inside when it comes to reading about family.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
