RE: Adios Amigo'syou said you don't care about the poetry contest but than you site your reason for leaving based upon the the skill level of the poems that win, that thier wins as you said were a lie and based more on popularity than on the skill of the poet. Did you not say and I will quote, "I cannot condone the calling of them "poetry", and certainly not of a "winning" calibre." We each have the right to our own opinion that is granted but do you really think this statement is fair to all the poets that have put in the time and effort into wining the contest??? Sure there are a few enteries that have won that did so based soley on the popularity of the poet more than the skill of the poem, but this poetry contest is not judged by a pannel of judges on the skill and talent of the poet or poem, but rather than the poets of this site, it is a democracy of sorts. I have noticed than many of the winning poems are often not the very best that the poet has to offer. But most if not all of the poets that have won are very good poets and well deserving in thier win and very often very overdue. One of the problems I think is the distinction beween the acedemic side of poetry and the artistic side. While I do agree that if you take some of the poem that have won and look at them from merely an acedmic skill level you could tear apart quite a few of them, but there is more to poetry than just perfect ryhme, meter, form, stanazas, etc. People like a poem they can understand and relate to on a personal and emotional level. Personally I love nothing more than to read a poem filled with hidden allegory and try to pick apart the underlying meaning, to understand the metaphors and the imagery, I will often read a poem many times to really let it settle in and sometimes will read a poem and comeback to comment on it days later to really let the thoughts run around in my mind, but I am certainly not the norm of this site, nor reality. Most people when they read poetry want to be able to understand what they are reading and relate to it on a personal and emotional level, to conect to the poem. A perfect example is footprints, one of the most famous poems of all time, yet if you really break the poem down it is very simplistic in form and nature, but people love it because they can relate to it, both on a personal and emotional level. There are so many different forms of poetry, so many levels and skill sets, who is to say and judge that one poem is so much better than another??? Who are you to say what makes a poem??? Poetry is many things to many people, and I think it is for the individual to decern for themselves what true poetry is. As for the constructive critism thing, I would add that this site has many different functions. if you are looking for the constructive academic side of things go to the school of poetry and you will see there is whole different world within a world, here you will find professors of poetry and english that will take even the best constructed poem and tear it into little pieces for the benifit of advancing the skill and gowth of the poet. You have to understand that there are many different levels of poets and writters on this site, everything from the begining teen poet, just learning to write, to very advanced and educated professional published poets that have thier own books in print. The higher level poets of this site do look for the more constructive side of things and love nothing more than for someone to break one of their poems, but the new and inspiring poets need to be encouraged and not broken down and beatup. You have to look at the level of the poet and understand this site holds a vast array of varying levels and poets. If you have a new poet that is say 10 or 11 years old and they are posting thier first poem, does it really benifit them if everyone came and tore thier poem into little pieces, this would destroy thier confidence and very likey drive them to quit writting, what purpose does this serve??? Not everyone on this site is here to become an acedmic poet, some people come here to vent and release thier angst, pain, torment, to silence the screams of thier nightmares. If you have a single mom that lost her newborn baby and she comes here to write and try to release some of the pain and gain some compassion and companionship, would it really benifit her if everyone took her poem about her lost angel and tear it into little pieces??? If you have a elderly widow who was married 40 years and lost her husband who was her very life, and she come here to release and to try to find some companionship, would it really benifir her if we all came in and tore her poems into little pieces??? I could go on and on with examples and I am not making up ficticious stories but rather siting poets that I have personally known and read here on OP. Just more food for thought... It has been publicly stated that all the 10's go to an anonymous panel where one is then selected so if a bunch of people ask their friends to pad their egos and tell them how great they are then a bunch of what is known as "a slap n the face to poetry" is what will be there to be selected from and honestly you chiming off all politically correct does absolutely nothing for the problems that exist. |

RE: Adios Amigo'scross- you are mistaken, there is no such pannel and there is no such system. The winners are based off of a gross mean rating system. I have known many winners that didn't have a perfect 10 and still won. I am a prime example, my poem "the eternal chess game", won and had a 9.9 it had like 45 reviews and most were tens but it was not a perfect 10, so that statement is not true. I am friends with papa and have talked with him about this before, there seems to be alot of confusion about this poetry contest and how the winner's are choosen. i will post my thread about the poetry contestand the rules and how the winner is choosen if you like, the information is in the ins and outs of OP under how to win the poetry contest 101. Papa has been thinking about changing the whole system in the near future and is considering several changes but as of now this is the system that they use, a gross mean rating system. the way it works is you get a point value for every review within the time period and then at the end of the contest period they add up all the points and see who has the highest number. So you can have many poems that keep a perfect 10 but get few reviews and they would not win, whilethe winner may not stay at a perfect 10 but have far more reviews and therefore have a higher mean number. here is an example. Lets say poem a has 10 reviews and all ten reviews are a perfect 10, the mean number would be 100. Poem B has 40 reviews and has 30 10's, 5 8's and 5 7's, the mean number would be a 375. While poem A did maintain a perfect 10 the mean total score was only a 100 while poem B had a mean score of 375 and would have won the contest. This is the way papa explained the stytem to me, now he did say if in the event there is a tie he does have a anamyous small goup that he has read the tieing poems and pick a winner, but they only do this if there is a tie in the total mean score, from what papa said it has happened only once or twice in three years. So the rumur ville of some elite pannel of judges that picks out the best poem is simply a rumur and not true. I hope this clears up some of the delusions and misinformation that has been spreading around. I am surprised you didn't know this cross as you have been a member here at OP as long as anyone i know. Now the system has changed since the begining but this is the current one in use, and I think papa said it has been the one in use for nearly two years now. Purity of the soul, journey well!!! with grace and humility ANGEL Alright I'll take another crack at it then in this reply I guess the almighty creator of poetry writing sent the muse to mess up my hair and molest my feelings I guess but essentially what you are telling me is the system is set up for me to send 1000 messages and for 1000 people to rate my poem a "1" for a score of 1000 and I'll win the contest? Also why are the top three rated poems anonymous other then the winner obviously why isn't there a spot in this forum for a moderator to post the scores of the top three poems a week so people can see that the system as stupid as it is works in the way people are being told it works and thirdly how is that system not an insult to poetry that to me (if I interpreted what you said correctly) is a slap in the face and is nothing short of pathetic and yes you are right I have been here way too long I deleted one account and Wordslinger will never let me live it down that I changed my name, Wordslinger is great lol. By the way as I told you before in a previous post my forum replies are just that they are not personal attacks on you I do not know you personally at all so just wanted to be clear that isn't what I'm doing. |

RE: Adios Amigo'sCROSS- I take no offense my friend, if my memory serves me correct you were the first friend who reached out to me when i joined here at OP back in 09, and for that I will always be greatful, I hold no illfeelings or disnontent towards you or anyone really, life is to precious and short for such things. As fot the rating system, I never said it was totally fair, it is what it is, I was only trying to clear up any confusion about the contest and how the rating system works. You make a good point about posting the mean total score so at the very least people will know that the system is real and works as it is described. I don't know personally, I was only relating the information that was given to me by papa and to the best I understand it. It is certainly a very confusing system to say the least, I would not argue this point. I just try to moerate the negativity that tends to spread like wildfire around this site at times, I try to keep the forums as positive and constructive as possible. You are correct, with the number of friends you have if you sent out a PM to each and everyone, which would take almost a week by it self with the amount of friends you have, you would surely win the contest regardless of the poem you entered, never said it was fair, was just trying to clear up the misinformation and confusion around the contest. The reason papa likes it is beacuse it is non-biased and the winners are choosen by the poets and not by some group of elite poets. If for say we had a pannel of judges, like most sites, they would mostly be comprised of the elite acedemic level poets. This would change the very basis of the site from a open community of various poets and skill sets and styles to a select elitist community. The poems that won would be based merely off of the structure, form, rhyme, meter, metaphors, imagery, and the skill level of the poet. But in truth, modern poetry of the 21st century is far more than it's form, there is more to poetry than rhyme, what of the essence and meaning of poetry and how well the writter conveys the raw emotions, how people can relate and connect to a poem??? Poetry has changed through the centuries, whether good or bad can be debated but one thing is for certain, when you are publishing a book of poetry, people don't want to buy a book of poetry that could have just as well been written 100 years ago. I think this is why OP has used the mean rating system and made it more democratic, so that the poems choosen would have a better appell and would represent more modern poetry of the 21st century. Just my take on it, perhaps I am off based. I have talked with papa and he is considering changing the system and does monitor all the forum threads for site improvements, I know it is something he is working on. What changes are in store I am not sure, he is looking over all the suggestions I think and will choose what he and the owners think is best for the site and thier goals. OP is far more tham just another poetry site, this place for better or worse is a commmunity, and for some a family and that is what makes OP great. If someone is looking just to advance thier skill set and enter into contests to be published there are poetry sites like that on the web a dime a dozen. So may people complain about how OP is a social networking site more than a poetry site, but I think this is what makes OP different and far supieror to other poetry sites on the web. There is something for everyone here. If you like the academic side of things and want to expand and grow within the art of poetry you have the school of poetry. If you want to socialize you have the chatrooms and PM. if you want open dicussions about poetry and just about anything else, you have the forums. If you want to get involved and make a difference, there is the interactive poetry forum and the poets of blood organization. OP can be many things for many people, you just have to know where to look. OP has also been a great avenue for poets to become more visible and gain a name for themselves within the poetic world, I know many poets here that have been published and even had thier own books published. Some people just come here to vent and release, to silence the screams and nightmares of thier past, Op is a great place for this as well. And I think in time OP will grow and become much more than we can imagine, only time will tell, the sky is the limit when the minds and hearts of poets come together as a community with a common goal, for thier voices to be heard. RE: Adios Amigo'scross- to make a small admendment to my prev statement, I see it wouldn't take you that long to send a PM to all your current friends as I see with your new profile you don't have nearly as many as you once did. If my memory serves me correct you used to have quite a few more with your prev profile, LOL. Angel out |

Purity of the soul, journey well!!! with grace and humility ANGEL Okay here we go again I think papa may have overlooked a crucial aspect in saying this system is unbiased when you ask someone to read and comment after they submit the comment the rating is optional so somebody could type a comment like a++++++ 10!!!! of course and make it seem like it is getting rated when in fact that person doesn't have to rate it at all and that would cause an imbalance in comments and rates and affect the mean number of the equation so in fact with this system you can be biased and actually be sneakier about it would we all like to think everyone is responsible and wouldn't be petty like that OF COURSE!!! but like you said this is in a way like real life, shits gonna happen a new system is a must for any type of credibility and I know that if someone decided not to rate the poem it is their option and papa would know if the poem wasn't rated but it still doesn't change the fact that papa would not be able to overstep his bounds and supplement a number in there as well. So this system is not unbiased. |
|
RE: Adios Amigo'sI can double check if you like but my understanding is that if someone comments on your poem but doesn't rate it, it doesn't give the poem a 0, it just doesn't count in the overall score at all, it basically makes thier comment null and void, atleast from a scoring standpoint. I am fully aware that this system is not without flaws and yes I agree with you, it still can be biased. But I think papa's intention is that the site itself stay unbiased, since for the most part OP is really not involved in the rating of the poems, there is no pannel of judges, so if there is any bias it is on the part of the members and us poets, not on OP or any member of thier team. I think this is what he meant by the contest not being biased. In truth nearly all contest that have some type of rating system, what ever it may be, will have some degree of bias. Even if there was a pannel of judges, do you not think there would be bias??? I think it is a given in no matter what system we have in use, there is no perfect system, only perfect ideals. The problems with ideals is they almost never fit well into reality. Purity of the soul, journey well!!! with grace and humility ANGEL |

Purity of the soul, journey well!!! with grace and humility ANGEL That's my point if it isn't rated it not counting towards the overall score is essentially rating it a zero. I may have an idea that can eliminate bias this would require volunteers (three judges a week keep the judges anonymous), the poems don't have a pen name attached to them and this is only a rough draft of an idea since I am doing this off of the top of my head and these three for the week would have to be serious about what they are doing kind of like a jury duty type of thing by that I mean not talking about the fact they are a judge etc, and maybe keep some kind of a rating system that limits the judges from having to view all entries take like the top 15 or 20 poems each individual judge would then on their own review the selected poems and say there are 15 poems they would rate the 1-15 with one being the lowest and 15 the best (most value point wise)and then average out the scores of the judges and the highest average is the winner and this way everyone still gets a say every week the judges would rotate so you would have all kinds of different mentalities so the same type of poem wouldn't be favored over the others week in and week out, like I said a rough draft of an idea but it's something Last edited by thecross 12-21-2010 at 05:06:44 AM |

RE: Adios Amigo'sokay, Ed, look... I'm 16 years old, have only been here since July, have one only once, BUT i'm also friends with a lot of people, especially Papa, Hip, and the other "chatters". If the contest was a conspiracy, then I'm pretty sure i'd've won more than once (not to sound egotistical)... the truth is, Yes, we do have a LOT of poets here and most of those probably get on maybe once a month. another good lot just dont post many poems at all (these are our "socialites"). Then there are the ones that post a ton of poems everyday and not many poeple get there fast enough to read the really good ones (like me lol i'm obsessive...)... So do you know whats left? the ones that are here everyday, the ones that have a lot of friends to look at their writes and say "oh hey, look, thats really good" (i heard you have only 18 friends... thats kinda not good if you want people to SEE you)... You also have to speak to everyone, go ahead and comment-whore if have to... |

Now another thing: no one is truely "the best". there will always be someone better, someone greater, ESPECIALLY in poetry! There are so many types to master, Haikus, sonnets, ballad, etc... NO ONE can master them all... So in fact ALL OF US are just... not. okay? Last, but not least, i really dont like all the bashing going on... its very chiildish and another reason i dont really LIKE going into forums. But i figured this was one of those times you "adults" needed a kick in the rear. So please, i want this to be the last post in this part of the forum. no more. Thank you. ~Audrey oh p.s. those who want to leave, just leave silently. its really idiotic to post this if you are just trying to start stuff. just leave. haha and YES, i know this is late. |

RE: Adios Amigo'sAs most of you know .. I really don't get involved too much in the forums, but I felt that this subject deserved my attention as well .. I asm in total agreement with Cross .. What harm is there in giving his idea a try? The current system is biased and his suggestion seems to be just and fair. Maybe the judges can be selected by solicitation among the most active poet/readers on the site? Or maybe even by allowing members to volunteer? Just a thought ... Anyway, as I said .. I am in agreement with Cross and believe that OP needs a change to progress and this would be a great start! Thanks, Ken |

I wonder if there's enough people out there that would seriously commit. Let's start here.. Who would want to do this? -Papa Paczki |

Purity of the soul, journey well!!! with grace and humility ANGEL @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ THANKS, Angel, You have clearly expounded our ideals and problems, and our cause and purpose, on the OP Site. Most of us are proud of the level of understanding commission and omisssion (LOL) that the site has reached. We shall not posture that the site is perfect, There is room for continuing improvement, and we shall work towards unattainable perfection. True poets will be proven and recognized as true poets who will not create an ivory tower nor a Tower of Babel. |

RE: Adios Amigo'sPapa ... I will volunteer .. if needed, but the judges need to be anonymous for this to work. A solicitation PM or email should be sent out to inquire if members would be interested .. and if so the judges can be chosen from the responses. |

I can't even imagine the chaos that would break out if everyone knew who they were. I wonder also if there should be integrity checks on the judges for that week. Things like them not being a friend connection of the poem in question. Have they won before. Do they leave good comments maybe. Any other checks? -Papa Paczki |

RE: Adios Amigo'sI just want to post poems, and do things for us all, I dont want to be a judge, Last edited by WordSlinger 12-21-2010 at 10:59:13 AM |
A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.
Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
