RE: Adios Amigo'sI think that you John, Olan, Angel, Gogant and some of the others have managed to turn this thread into something positive........Expressing ideas to help the OP site is always a good thing and I know that there are many more of you who have some great ideas you would like to express. So why not speak out and lay them all out on the table. I know that surly at least one if not more of your ideas will become a reality that will benefit the whole OP family if we all can get together and help Papa and and the team get one of these ideals rolling. All they need is our support and a little help with the details........Papa and Pac=man are not going to change or add anything new to the site if they don't get enough input from the members of the site that agree on an idea that would benefit all if not a good majority of it's members.... |

RE: Adios Amigo'sJohn has asked me if I would like to chime in on this thread. Not a bad idea - - not at all because I’m intrigued by the sight of an open wound or that I‘d like to publically polarize my thought process by taking sides. For me, the veneration of all things truthful is a major player in the aspirational part of life. Yet I still love fantasy because dreams are fun and energizing. What to write about as a writer if not the state of possibility? Delve into quantum physics in the search for what makes up truth and there are many more questions to play with then we’ve got time to play. |

RE: Adios Amigo'sWell said, This thread needs to rest a bit, for many grow tired and will rest comment for the moment. Certain others would go out of their way to keep it going in an up and down way. New Years wishes to all k |

I however write quite good POETRY,( yes even humility on my behalf recognizes this). which is what this site purports to be for. I have chosen to remain quiet and leave with my dignity intact, but comments like yours drive me to levels of anger to which I cannot remain silent. Sure you claim to have had your work "published", but anyone with a credit card and the ability to use Google, can have their work published. This in no way makes your efforts relevent in this field. My apologies to all for taking this negative turn, but I cannot stand idly by and watch someone of this ilk pretend to be "holier than thou" Ed Whiner, Are you still here? I thought you had announced in a BIG WAY that you were leaving after bashing this wonderful site with your "holier than thou" first post on this thread. And just to educate your severe ignorance: I have never "flashed my credit card" to get published—ask my publisher: www.mystillpoint.net. I look at your age (47) and your pre-school-like whining and I ask myself: Are you for real? If you can't be embarrassed for your self then I will be embarrassed for you Happy Twenty 11, dah |

While many ,if not all ,of the winning entries may express depth of thought, I cannot condone the calling of them "poetry", and certainly not of a "winning" calibre. Many of you can and will of course revel in the bashing of my comments and current decision, but none of you can legitimately assert that my own work is anything less than (at a minimum), well written. The choice of many of the winning entries is blatantly a "lie" and your support of these entries, along with your unfounded praise, in no way is helping the writers better their chosen craft. Honesty ,though at times hurtfull, at least is an effort to HELP struggling writers improve their craft. In every situation, let us pick out the good for our learning. Some of what is said above may have some credibility. I am not here to judge anyone. I understand this is not a poetry school online, just a medium of expression. It would however be good to constructively criticize someone and let them learn, than to tell them that a work shabbily done is beautiful work. I guess however, that we see differently in each poem. And no post here is rubbish, it all has been published.. bye now and keep up the posts, This thread I hope never gets deleted, or shall I say posts can, come on... Happy New Year.. Sometimes it good to be plain honest. It's better than being hypocritical. I believe it's really bad when someone presents poor poetry and is being told it's beautiful, even when the person making such commendation is aware that the material is poor. Be honest with ourselves and let us commend good poetry, provide tips on those who needs improvement, we can criiticize privately, by sending email messages. If we are objective, we will see the best poems winning a competition and not cliques and friends voting for each other. The danger of applauding poor poetry everytime is that the level of artistry in poetry will fall and this site will become a secondrate site of amateur writers. maybe me can learn from criticisms and lift the standard and promote poems of quality over friends wanting to appease friends. RE: Adios Amigo'spoemeter- I would agree that constructive critism can be beificial in helping a poet develop and grow within thier art and further thier poetic skills and I will not argue about this point, but what Ed didn't slow down to understand is that there is a time and a place for such critism. Most poets, including myself will review a poem and point the positive aspects, and then if I have something negative or constructive to point out will most often do so as a private PM. Ed would not know and did not do his homework to realize that, this is how many of us at OP respond constructively. I don't think it helps a poet to grow if you pick apart thier poem with a fine tooth comb in public, all I think this does is belittle the person and often they take it very personally. There is also the school of poetry that many poets that want such critism go to as well as the forum "critize my poem". Many poets here also post not to be critized as much as to release, to vent, to bleed some of the emotions of one's pain, inner torment, fustrations, etc. Some poems posted here are extremely personal and open, I can't in good conciousness pick apart a poem about a mom who lost her baby angel to cancer, true story. Sometimes it is more appropriate to just move on to something else if you can not find something positive to say. Poetry is different for us all, what makes a great poem for one person might be quite different for another, who is to say who is right??? Who is the better poet, the acedemic poet who can write with perfect form, rhyme, meter, allegory etc, or the street poet that writes with pure emotion, heart, soul??? Personally I think the whole rating system should be changed, I hate giving a rating to a poem, it is such a personal experience and so subjective to evaluate a poem, what makes a poem a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 , 6, 7, 8, 9, or a perfect 10??? What criteria do we use to judge??? How much a poem moves you, how well you can relate to it, how well it was written, how great the rhyme and meter is, if it was thought provoking, the imagery, the metaphors, how well it fits into some box we label it as??? Who amoung us is truely quialified to rate a poem based on all these levels, and will it not be different for each of us since we all have our own unique perspectives and will read and relate to each poem so differently??? I am certainly not the expert but I ask who amoung us is??? Who knows enough to say they know and can judge everything??? I know enough to say this, " The only thing I know for certain is I know nothing, the only thing worth knowing is thyself, and it is a life long goal". Purity of the soul, journey well!!! with grace and humility ANGEL Last edited by angel33614 01-03-2011 at 03:23:32 AM |

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
