EMPTY PRETENSES
I pretended not to notice when you pushed my hand away.
I pretended not to hear you when you said you couldn't stay.
But I can't pretend I don't see you as you pack your bags and leave.
As I watch your taillights fade, I can't pretend I don't believe.
I can pretend that someday you'll come back to me,
But I can't hide the tears you pretend not to see.
Even as my hopes fade, I continue to pretend.
But I can't fool myself that this is not the end.
