Poem Commentary

This one is pretty weird. It started out as a love poem but completely took on a life of it's own. It became something dark and twisted. I think that it is about someone is going to war and who knows that they will die and they don't want the person that they care about to watch it happen so they are pushing them away. Yeah, I think that is it. I also skipped like three verses in the middle that I don't really like.

Untitled #1

If I lose my path
And cannot remember the way I came
If I forget the sound of your laugh
And the way you speak my name
And if all of nature's mysteries
Elude me throughout my life
Will the blood on my breath
And the slowing of my heart
Bring us closer together
Or only tear us apart?

If we find that the rain
Is  not going to cease
Will we choose to swallow the pain
or find a sweeter release?
How many miles can you carry the weight?
How many stars must we defy?
Before you give in and leave me to fate
I can't bear the thought of you watching me die

And if the sun shines on
Even after I am gone
I would hate to say it
But I told you so
And if the world still turns
As my body burns
I would hate to see it
But I did try to warn you

Do you need to hear
The final breath I am soon
to choke on?
Will it make your angelic light dissapear
To see the glory of death washed away?
I hate that I need you to stay

And if the sun shines on
Even after I am gone
I would hate to say it
But I told you so
And if the world still turns
As my body burns
I would hate to see it
But I did try to warn you

We can't always pretend
That the future isn't set in stone
And thet love has no end
Because it's killing me now
Just to leave you alone

And my heart shatters a million times over
When I think of the pain you'll go through
Because the only time
That I have truly been happy
Is when I think of a future with you

And if the sun shines on
Even after I am gone
I would hate to say it
But I told you so
And if the world still turns
As my body burns
I would hate to see it
But I did try to warn you

And in the final moments
Of the race
When all that is left to savor
Is a metallic taste
Will I be able to let you walk away
Or would I dare comdemn you to stay?

And as we watch the night
Devour the last of the daylight
Basking in the pain we feel
Embracing the tragedy of the moment
To forget the promise and deny the deal
Truth is a whisper that is hard to ignore
That being with you makes it impossible for me
To face the demons at the door

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
