Poem Commentary

This is about losing of one of the most important people in your life and not knowing why.

The Cloak of Friendship

We wore our cloak of friendship

Like the finery of royalty

Now it hangs threadbare and tattered

A dishonored breach of loyalty

 In the armoire of desolation

A mere cloud of evanescence

This kinship once so vibrant

Now stripped of incandescence

Treasured memories from a lifetime

Just discarded and destroyed

Pray tell me how a heart feels heavy

When it’s nothing but a void

Drowning in my dolor

Our lost friendship to lament

You just let it slip away

When for a lifetime it was meant

The eternal questions, why? I find my love relationships do not last but friendships last forever. Why? Is it the sex or the constant being together. When I was young my cousins would come to visit twice a year and we spend every second together we could playing. After about two weeks we would be fighting and my aunt would separate us for a few hours saying we had too much of each other. As children we forgive and forget fast because our brains are not as ridged and we would play again as though nothing had happened. As adults I find the longevity of friendships is the amount of space we allow each other. In a marriage or loving relationship this is not alway possible and soon the relation become tattered as you say. Relationships take balance of space and time together and it take two like minded people who understand this without being hurt by the time apart. It takes faith and trust in the other and a perfect blending of personalities. We are often attracted by chemical signal sent out by our body to copulate. Human were not designed originally to be monogamous by nature be cause the human species was short lived and the seed had to be propagated to as many fertile wombs as possible to assure the success of the species. The female is able to keep the sperm of up to three men viable at once until the ova is ready, just the eternal question, Who’s the daddy, and endless “blank” looks when judges tell women that DNA tests are negative that the defendant is the father, BAM! Hit me over the head.

This is something that I can relate to so very well, Julie. I have a friend who I thought would be around until the end of time, only to realize that I was completely disposable for her. It hurts like hell. You've captured the emotions perfectly. Very nicely done.

The reader can feel the emotional loss, the heart felt pain with every tear stained line read, pertaining to a great friendship that once was.

as FleetMac says..'go your own way...' frendship is hard to build and even harded to maintain, unfortunately we all go our own ways-very nicely written indeed

julie, This poem is written so precisely, with so much passion. The passion in each and every line that questions the reasons for a missing friend emotes pathos. ty ginga

Thanks so much for reading and understanding.

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
