Pig-tails, Freckles, Kisses and Eggs
Do ya wanna catch some bullfrogs?
I once asked a pig-tailed freckle nose
She had a reedy kinda voice
But otherwise was normal
Not having any sisters,
I really had no idea what girls were good for
Other than getting them to do tricks
Like sticking their tongue out at ya
Do ya wanna catch some bullfrogs?
Nah, but we can ride our bikes
But I don’t have one, I confessed
We can take turns on mine, then.
And so we did for a long, long while
Both of us quite content with each other
She thrilled to have company
And I to ride a bike
The next day after school she asked me,
Are you hungry, and I being six said, yeh
‘Cause I was always hungry
Even though Mom really tried.
Mom’s at work, I’ll fix ya somethin’
By then she was buried in the fridge
I wanted grilled cheese, she said,
But eggs will have to do, do ya like em?
This was great, I thought, girls can be good for friends
PB&J was the most my buddies knew
Or stealing cookies from a jar
But now, here, with eggs beginning to hiss . . .
I thought that along with salt and pepper
Those eggs should be accompanied by a kiss
I’m sure if some camera woulda caught me
I’d cringe while others snickered
But my little pig-tailed chef
Merely beemed upon complying
As though it was the most normal thing in the world
To have a guy eating outta your hand, cause for her it was.
