Secret Sanctuary
My husband found a treasure;A secret in the wild.
He thrashed through dense green forest,
with the excitement of a child.
We sat and patiently waited
to hear him respond to our call.
We worried he'd been gone so long;
perhaps he tripped and had a fall.
We thought we heard a woman
screaming in the wood.
Saying "stay away from here"
We also thought we heard a dog
yipping out of fear.
Was it wild pigs snorting
or insane wood folk?
I worried....Where's my old man?
DID HE HAVE ANOTHER STROKE?
In the sky high over us
we saw five Blue Heron
making a fuss
We waited with anticipation
For Tom to return
from his exploration
When he rejoined us
his smile was beaming.
Down his face sweat was streaming.
His breath was labored and short.
He was so excited to report.
HE FOUND A HERON ROOKERY
and stood beneath nests in a tree
Discovering a birder's dream
we will return to witness this scene.
