little tears
You don't know that you just broke my Mama's plate.
Your great grandMother's plate that I coveted for years.
The one your great GrandFather handed to me the day after she died.
There it lay, shattered on the floor like so many pieces of my heart.
I once displayed it proudly, as a remembrance of her.
It is far too splintered for me to repair now....
You look up at me, big green eyes watering,
because you saw my tears fall.
You don't understand; All you know is you did something that made Grandma cry, and so you cry too.
Oh my little one, please forgive me!
As special as that plate was, it is just a 'thing'...the memories I have attached to it are still in my heart, unbroken.
You, alive, flesh and blood of my blood, with my eyes, looking at me now, worried and anxious.
Hush now; Don't you know the only precious thing here to me is you?
We'll pick up the pieces and throw them away,
and where that plate once stood we'll put a picture of you and me and your great-Grandma,
and everything will be just fine..
