Unfinished Business
For years, I have seen you watch me.
From afar, from beside me, your eyes followed my path.
They’ve seen me make my mistakes,
They’ve seen me stumble, they’ve seen me standing tall.
Yet always, they watched.
I’ve noticed you watching
I’ve read yearning in your face and eyes.
But because you stayed back, because you never spoke,
I never stepped forward, never met you eye to eye.
I never encouraged you to speak,
I never acknowledged that I knew.
And so the years passed in silence
As unspoken words so often do.
Our lives turn in circles
What was then once again becomes now.
And the issues we faced then,
We now face anew.
Is it age that makes us realize the speed of the passing of time?
Is it time that makes us realize the things we should have done?
Is it fate that grants a person another glance at unfinished business?
Is it unfinished business that won’t allow us to move on?
There are so many questions,
That it only stands to reason
There are just as many answers, if we let ourselves believe
We’ve been given a rarity in life, a second chance to see,
A chance to stand again in that long ago space
To stand again before that unknown
To open our eyes and honestly see,
The messages that had flown between you and me.
We don’t know the future,
We don’t know what will be…
But those eyes always watching have remained in my mind
And if those eyes still follow me, I’ll ask what they see,
If what they wanted could have been me.
For I’ve learned through the years,
That the language of body and eye,
In reality, rarely lie.
