Once Upon a Time
Once Upon A Time
by
Kelly M. Kirkpatrick
Once upon a time I wrote love songs.
Once upon a time I was blessed
With a passion for the music
And someone for it to speak to,
But now it's time to put some dreams to rest.
When I was younger
I had so much to say;
I thought my words could open every ear,
But now that I am older
The words don't seem so easy.
Though they help sometimes to fight away the tears.
I guess it doesn't matter
That I never made it;
The bright lights have never shone for me,
But as long as I have reason
To stay among the living
I'll accept my place and simply let it be.
Once upon a time there were blue skies.
Once upon a time I believed
That fate would show her mercy
Upon this humble writer,
Then I could live with all my fears relieved.
If I was a star,
Then this would all be easy
For fame is such a simple tale to tell.
Everybody wants
To hear about the winners,
But no one will remember those who fell.
Paint for me a sunrise,
A bright and new beginning.
Brush away the dark and starless night.
Set a place for someone
Who once had felt unwanted,
And let me sit with you within the light.
Once upon a time there was romance.
Once upon a time I knew pain,
But I have not forgotten
The meaning of the love song,
And in my heart I know those dreams remain.
