    Mother

You were a friend, without ceasing to be a mother
You gave us love and discipline never one without the other
You taught us to be respectful or we would feel the leather
No one was heard asking us “Didn’t your momma teach you better?”
We couldn’t talk back or speak in a defiant tone
We learned early that was something you didn’t condone
You taught us that we could not always have our way
That’s a lesson that’s rarely taught by mothers today
We didn’t get everything we wanted no matter how much we pleaded
You gave us some of what we wanted but everything we needed
You were consistent in your ways and was never second guessed
It takes a strong person to say no when they want to say yes
You taught us to appreciate what we have because many have less
To share with others that with which we’ve been blessed
You taught us to love and care for one another
And be an example as you were being our mother.
