Re: Can Poetry Save the Earth?

lol, thank ya, I take it as a point, and your poem is not funni, but i see your being sarcastic,
whatever, lol

Earth 13 points
whatever ya call yourselves 6

Maybe you can call yourselves, Yellow World,

Ya Yellow World, that's what we'll call ya
Yellow World

Earth 2.0 13 points
Yellow World 6 Points

From the John E WordSlinger Anthology-Nudged Sketches of Flighty Things-Earth 2.0

Earth 2.0

All over the planet we will find
complaints against mankind
Pressure, earth is not steady
Ice is melting rapidly
Unleashing, and will not recede
It’s the fall of the glacier
Let’s face it here, there’s
no security in an uncertain world
So sing boys and girls

Geo pi, geo pi
Science man
Fix our planet as fast as you can
solar wind, solar wind
Earth a beautiful, universal island!

What’s your favorite animal?
What’s your favorite place to go?
I love water falls, and hunting buffalo
People, people we need earth 2.0
I’ am crying blind, we need to flow

The Story of the Statue of Liberty.

Anyone who says one person can’t make a difference has never heard the story of the Statue of Liberty.

Re: Can Poetry Save the Earth?

I believe this goes here. In this thread it has been said no poetry can't save the earth because poets are observers which I agreed with until my mind got to thinking that YES POETS ARE OBSERVERS! Hence they see, hear and know what is going on in their surroundings our surrounding in this case being earth so my idea is form multiple groups for different types of charities and each group will write for that charity their group themes topics poems would revolve around that charity be it st Judes, care packages for soldiers who have nobody to send them to them, autism etc etc then each group once they have a collection or a book could then try to get that published in some way shape or form so that the proceeds of the books could then be donated to the charity that the group had written their book for

Re: Can Poetry Save the Earth?

The End

If you had to pick an ending
Which one would it be?
Overpopulation,
Famine, war or poverty?

Maybe global warming
Or pandemic AIDS or flu?
Is that an end, you think, my friend,
That really pleases you?

There's economic meltdown,
Oil depletion, poison air
Perhaps atomic holocaust
Might be your favorite fare?

Then there's new technology
That we could fall prey to
Like bio-engineered bugs
Or nanotech grey goo.

It isn't any wonder
That we are feeling lost.
The problems facing us are huge
And don't forget the cost.

So we stock up on beer and chips
And keep away the blues
By tuning in the sitcoms
And turning off the news.

There is one thing that's clear to me
From the way that they have grown,
These problems will not go away
Simply on their own.

If history's any lesson
To get these problems solved
You gotta stand, roll up your sleeves
You gotta get involved!

What if old George Washington
Had turned his back and run?
If Ike had passed on Omaha
And D-Day was undone?

If Lincoln flinched on slavery
And Dr. King did too,
And Meade backed off at Gettysburg
Cause his forces were too few?

If Susan B. refused to vote
And the Wrights refused to fly
What would be left to make us great
To give us worth and pride?

I'm sorry folks, I gotta say
This isn't how it's done.
We simply don't throw up our hands
Then turn our backs and run.

When we are faced with challenges
To keep our country free
We have to think more of "us"
And a little less of "me"

Re: Can Poetry Save the Earth?

I say if poetry can
stop a mother from abusing her kids
help an abuse victim to get out of it
heal a broken heart
allow many persons to vent out
financially supports some
while teaches lessons to others
even our kids learn from it
gets others hooked on reading
and brings out good writers to show their talent
some how it helps the lonely to find friends
those in pain are given hope in a way
I think poetry is forever here to stay
so my answer is yes!
of course poetry can save the world
It saved my life and is my life
I sleep, eat, dream and live in poetry
so yes! yes! yes! and yes!
Poetry can save the earth
grin

Re: Can Poetry Save the Earth?

i'm discovering these random threads and enjoying very much ... kudos to those who have started and contributed to these great discussions!! you're some of my very favorite thinkers and artists ... i'm glad these are archived/still available ...

hmmmm ... and if i had to contribute to this discussion ... it might be along the lines of ... "Save the Earth" ... a rather arrogant notion in itself ... sort of gets my hackles up, actually ... how about ...

Can Poetry ... Save Us?

For We and the Earth are one. Separation is an illusion ... and perhaps the source of our consistent arrogance in dealing with her ... and each other ... . Destruction of the Earth means Destruction of Us, Friends. Destruction of Each Other means Destruction of Us. These things are not separate.

But ... to answer the REAL question ... from this academic ... it sounds to me like the First real question being asked is:

Can Poetry ... Have tangible effects?

smile YES

Can Poetry ... Inspire Action?

smile YES

Could Saving the Earth be a by-product of compassionate observation, greater understanding, and thoughtful action?

smile YES

Can Poetry be a vehicle for sharing compassionate observation, creating greater understanding, and inspiring thoughtful action?

smile YES

So ... i guess my bottom-line two cents is ... YES smile It's a start.

Re: Can Poetry Save the Earth?

Without a doubt,
poetry can save the world. Isn't the pen mightier than the sword? What is the world? Is it the earth and where we spend our physical life, or is it the heavens, the after world of dark and light? I believe it to be both. I see God looking down on this discouse and his angels laughing at us because they already know that it is the soul that is important, that saves us and, by extention, our world or what we perceive as our world. It is thinking that nurishes the soul, learning that encourages it. That is the definition of poetry. Just think, at one time the world was thought to be flat because to think otherwise would mean we would fall off. There is a line of thought that the world became round when it was first thought to be round, that the thought creates or changes reality. No one can fly, or reach the moon, telephones, Grocery stores, automobiles, supermarkets, indoor plumbing, democracy, rock music, etc. etc. All thought to be impossible until a mind thought and, presto! it became reality, no longer a fantasy,it changed reality. Poetry is the one thing that can influence the mind and the soul in a way condoned and encouraged by the Holy Spirit. It is possible that God is waiting for us to see, to see the galaxy as our back yard, to see the power and beauty he has given us by his word, his word that changed all things, and we all know that the old testament is pure written poetry, and that it once saved the world, and will again.
I know there are dissenters, this is just my opinion.

Re: Can Poetry Save the Earth?

I wrote this poem for Dragonfly and his ecological poet endeavor to save nature.

WILLOW

Beneath
this old willow tree,
shaded by the smell of leaves
that were flirting with the nearby apple blossoms,
I sit encumbered by the weigh of its' boughs
as it requests my mind sift the morning colors.

It is distracting
me in a pleasant way,
making fun of my labor to confess,
my heart strings to your breast,
pen nuzzling to make amends on this paper from his brethren,
and laughing
at my quest
to rent in a somber manner.

Beseech me not,
I answer back, startled
by my small indignation and intent
quantifying the tone
emanating from my voice
as I explain
my choice
to be so preoccupied.

I am on a true quest,
begun as assurance to my lover
she will become my wife
and has as is the way of moral manner,
when the former becomes the later,
to live with her my life.

To this clear plea
he says to me,
in the manner
that we sow, so shall we reap,
but please don't digress,
from the nature
of our company please keep
a kernel of the cause the union of my applet and me
will allow for you to see just how life will be together,

O so the willow
will allow
a reverie,
his thought to provoke a question
if his measure of both storm and weather
is as it is for man and woman
as it is for the growing trees,
that the eons have blessed,
the humor in the hidden pattern for the willow tree and me
then time has made us free to be released as cosmic matter,
together and forever.

Re: Can Poetry Save the Earth?

I wish it was that easy to save the Earth.
Call me a cynic, but I don't think all the words in the world could save anything unless they were backed by concrete action.
A lot of people talk. But what is actually being done?

!
there's so much to be done ... and being done ... that it may be hard to choose a focus.
but once you choose, and commit, your effect will be felt
as your heart is sincere ...
and your will is strong smile

You're not being cynical, you are being real. I am with you. Preaching is preaching, it's talking. what really counts is the stirring of hearts to action, which is only genuine when our hearts already waist deep in the battle ourselves.

So if we wanna try, let's get truckin and call for people to follow us, not send them out from where we are.

That is what makes Poetry, IMHO. It comes from the heart. Any fool given 10 minutes can keep a steady meter and rhyme, or just shock the hell out of someone with a mix of cliches and erotic images.

Re: Can Poetry Save the Earth?

aho ...
and i would add ...
that the best poetry
is not preaching,
but talking ...

sharing ...

exploring smile

and if you live your life
talking, not preaching,
sharing, not hoarding,
exploring, not simply
resting into the arms
of the status quo ...

you will create
the best life,
and have much
beautiful poetry
to share
indeed smile

with luv!

Kt, Of course we all have it within our power to change the world.

When I was younger I always thought that if we could just elect the right people to office we could change the world. I gave up on that years ago (although current events seem to indicate that I shouldn't have given up so soon...).

But, when I gave up on politics I started taking in foster kids. I have one who was an orphan but I put him through college and he graduated number one in his University. I have two in college now both with scholarships, a high school student who just brought me a report card with 4 A's and 2 B's, and another one who is trying... trying.

So, can we change the world? Let's put it this way. Can you help one person? If you do that, you change the world.

Can you reach one person with your poetry? If so, in some way, you have changed the world.

One rain drop is a small thing, but the rain never gives up and over the years even the mightiest mountains will crumble and wash away.

I think it's one of those Professional Verbs.
Yes it is, it goes like this.

As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens
the countenance of a friend.

We are looking very sharp.

Earth Band-Aid Stuck On we

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
