Re: Contest Is A Popularity Contestall well and good idea,s and comments, agree to most, scoring or judging should be done differently, if this was a OP thing done by the site.(UPA is a members contest created by a member) I always thought there should be a 2nd and 3rd place too. But with the volume of poems each week for the weekly OP contest, they would need a panel of judges willing to read all new submissions that way none would be missed and all given a fair chance, just my opinion and I don't mean to step on anyone's toes and this is a great site for al our poetry. |

Re: Contest Is A Popularity ContestI absolutely agree. I've posted a poem on here but I'm going to delete it because the contest is a popularity contest just like what the open poster said. Last edited by Teala 09-02-2009 at 10:35:54 AM |

The poems should all be annoymous in the contest until the contest is over. This is the best idea for next year, nice one, sweet it is. Last edited by WordSlinger 09-08-2009 at 11:01:01 PM |

Re: Contest Is A Popularity ContestI posted my opinion a few weeks back in the form of a poem called "The Winning Poet". It is my understanding that they are going to scrap the current "popularity contest" approach to the weekly contest and replace it with....... still a mystery. |

I'm still actively following any conversation that has to do with contests, ratings, etc tho. Re: Contest Is A Popularity ContestThis is a P.S. to my previous post. I used to be of the opinion that accumulating friends was the road to winning the weekly contest (See my poem Friends) but I have since changed my mind. I spend about 75% of my reading time on this site scouring the latest Friends activity so I can read and comment on their poems. The other 25% of my time is spent in reading randomly. I find that out of dozens of friends there are only a handful that seem to follow my work and I am very appreciative of that. There is another group of Friends that will gladly read your work and comment if you notify them by personal message that you have posted a new poem. I am sure you are all aware that you can currently only send personal messages to one Friend at a time. I understand that will change in the future when the next major round of improvements are implemented. This brings me to the third group of Friends (the vast majority) that just don't bother or are too busy to read and comment on your work. It is my personal opinion that there are at least a dozen or so poems every week that are worth of being singled out for recognition. One of the improvements that I submitted was to do away with the single weekly winner and post the top five or top ten poems weekly..assuming of course that they can come up with a selection process that is unbiased. |

Re: Contest Is A Popularity ContestFirst,I am really proud of everyone who took a trophy. To be recognized for an accomplishment is such a wonderful feeling of healthy pride. When I first came here,I was stoked about the contest and possible publication. Then,I started to critisize my own work harshly when questioning-why not me.I would read some winners poetry and feel a kind of jealousy that just didnt settle right in my bonesLOL.I am by nature extreamly competitive,so for me-involving myself in contest such as this, takes away why I LOVE TO WRITE!-I dont want to begin writing from my soul..only to question if it will impress enough to have alittle trophy by it.Although I do feel that it is such an honor to be recognized for such a gift-in my case,I will lose site of why I write-or more so,why I love to write! |

Re: Contest Is A Popularity ContestI agree. I don't think any writing site contest are legit if the author is not anonymous. Just my newbie two cents. |

Re: Re: Contest Is A Popularity ContestQuote: Originally Posted by Rottiestyl I agree. I don't think any writing site contest are legit if the author is not anonymous. Just my newbie two cents. You are 100% correct... Bias is automatically built-in to any writing "contest" if entries or submissions contain any associative cognitive attributes such as (but, not limited to) author's name, gender, age, race, country, religion, shoe size, or anything other "add-on" which, by default, sets them apart from others beyond their content alone... The "contest" results are by default, invalid... The voting process here is highly questionable as well... Thank you for your input... |

I'm sure the contest being run here promotes a bit of site interest, but beyond that most of the real writers here don't put much credence into it... Like myself, you, and most others here, we love to write what we feel and hope that others may take away a little something for themselves for just having spent the few minutes reading the piece... Thanks Maddy, keep up your own wonderful scripts... Doug |

Thanks Hamp... Your breakdown of where you spend your time here is much the same as mine; ie, I spend about 3/4 of my time on this site reading others pieces, and the rest either commenting to them, those that comment me, or answering the mailbox messages... I used to open this site up on the front page and scour through the new stuff there, but I rarely look at it anymore; preferring to see what my friends are reading and surf that way for new material to entertain my gray matter... Thanks for you input my friend.... |
