The Casino
A twinge of anxiety and anticipation,I feel as if I can't get through the
door fast enough, almost as if someone
is dragging me to the entrance.
Once in, I hear those sounds,
ding, ding, ding
the slot machines.
People talking, laughing, yelling
as their winnings go higher and
higher.
Lights flashing, all different colors,
numbers flashing as amounts rise to
thousands, ten-thousands, and even
hundred-thousands of dollars,
on the progressive machines.
I walk through the maze of machines, searching,
searching for the right one to play, I hear it calling, "Here I am, let's play!"
The feeling in my gut says,
"Aw what the hell, take a chance."
I put my card in the slot and load the monster
up with my cash, I enter another world,
mesmerized.
I watch five lines spinning, sucking my cash
down at sixty cents a spin.
As they stop spinning, one line at a time,
from left to right, knowing that if the icons
in the first three lines match or not, will make
me a winner or a loser.
HOORAY!!!!!!!
The screen fills up with matching icons,
left to right and top to bottom.
Victory music starts to play from the machine,
Icons of coins start flying across the screen
from both sides, winnings are adding up,
I just won six-hundred dollars!
My heart and my head say "I should cash out
and go home," but the gambler in me says
"maybe I can turn six-hundred dollars into
nine-hundred dollars."
So I sit there, pushing the button, hypnotized,
as the screen spins and spins.
An invisible anchor keeps me tied to my chair
as I feed my winnings back into the monster with the insatiable appetite for all my money.
I watch as my cash dwindles away.
A floor attendant comes by and gives me a soft
drink and water, but no matter how much water
or soft drinks I drink, My mouth remains dry,
my butt is numb and my wallet is empty.
With a twinge of despair, I get up to leave, I
realize I've lost all my money.
"Oh well, at least I had a great time doing it!"
