If I Didn't

It's as though nothing happened,
Every word, every look, every kiss, every touch.
You told me you have feelings for me,
Feelings I know so much.

We would talk so often,
But now we hardly speak at all.
At times I still feel your eyes,
And when I catch them my heart gets weak with one question, why won't you call?

She doesn't understand you,
Your thoughts, your feelings, your ways.
I appreciate everthing about you.
If I didn't I wouldn't think of you, at times for days.

I wish you weren't so afraid,
Afraid of your feelings for me.
I wish I could make it easier for you.
But all I do know is that your friend I will always be.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
