I shall not write again
I shall not write again!
You’ll find my paper blank.
I shall not lift my pen
If there is none to praise or thank.
Is it of love, of time, of life?
What’s it about that I must write;
what views must I express
when swiftly precious thoughts take flight?
How much can I elaborate
when there is none to say?
if there’s no essence in the words
how can I write, I pray?
I shall not spill my ink in store
on lovely words and rhymes
that ears can easily adore
but convey empty lines;
just like a drizzle from above
where light disheveled clouds abound
whose tears dry up before
they quench the arid ground.
Shall I write of the sky, the sea;
simply because they enchant me?
But if their splendor’s known to all,
I can portray no more to thee.
Yes, I can write a thousand more
yet not delight on even one
for none my pleasure can restore
if I can’t find my purpose done.
It’s worthless wasting wondrous words
if I can’t touch the hearts of man.
If there’s no glint to reach this end,
I shall not write again!
