Voters .. Stand Up .. Sound OffHypothetically .. say you're a poet tied in first place at the end of an honest contest. |
|
RE: Voters .. Stand Up .. Sound OffPersonally, I hate to see grammatical errors, spelling errors, etc. They interrupt the flow of a poem. It also makes me wonder how much time the poet spent editting and perfecting their piece. |
|
RE: Voters .. Stand Up .. Sound OffThink of it like a sport, SBear. How many people cuss the refs more than the other team, for their bad calls. Sometimes we don't agree with the refs calls, but other times we know the ref is right and we choose to cuss em anyways for taking the ball away from our team. |

RE: Voters .. Stand Up .. Sound OffOy vey! |

RE: Voters .. Stand Up .. Sound OffSpeaking hypothetically, I a poetry and anthology consumer wouldn't spend money |

RE: Voters .. Stand Up .. Sound OffIn, response to JL, I think the site as been pretty supportive of Toms idea by having it mentioned in the weekly advisory they send each time the weeks contest winner is announced. I hope the rules do not change, as the idea of the contest itself, I thought were a good idea...No Ratings, just comments. If another comments not knowing whose piece it is, then consider yourself a good writer that you were able to stir someone enough to make them want to comment. It is not the OP contest, but a rather another great attribute available to the sites users to have fun with, which was monitored completely voluntarily by the designer of the contest. There will kinks in any game or contest, but I hope more get involved in the future, and I also hope that Tom doesn't bend to accomadate everyone, because you can never make everyone happy at once, and it is his contest. By the way, I am a very sore loser, I just choose not to share that side of me here lol. |

RE: Voters .. Stand Up .. Sound Offinteresting thread, StandingBear ... i had that thought as i was commenting on ALL the final contestants (sorry about that ... i wasn't much help as far as a "tie" was concerned) ... that if i had to choose one over another, i would give demerits for grammatical errors ... and there was at least one ... |
|
RE: Voters .. Stand Up .. Sound OffFirst of all, I think that, all things considered, we need to revise the voting system, However, I feel wrong bringing up problems with no solutions... |
|
RE: Voters .. Stand Up .. Sound OffI think, that the whole thing is being blown out of proportion. It was a light-hearted bit of competition. Nothing more. It was just a typo, why do you care so much? Let it go. |

"Bombs Over Utopia" is presently declared the winning entry though in all truth this entry has resulted in 2nd Place due to an "acknowledged illegitimate vote". "Voters .. Stand Up .. And that's a very good thing. My disappointment does stem, though, from the small attention this contest has generated thus far. I hope that OP will interview the monthly winners. I hope those interviews cause more folks to tune into the contest. I hope that by the end the comments are greatly enhanced...not just 10 or 20, but 90 or 100. (Sorry, Tom...that would be a great deal more work for you!) No hard feelings of any sort. I'm glad I participated. And I am happy for the winner...whose name I'd have to look up, sorry. He took the top place in the final two weeks and that speaks to his great gift. Kudos! Should we be sure spelling and punctuation are accurate? Yes, I think so. Otherwise it's like my sister's cooking...excellent except for the burned parts...boy I hope she doesn't read that! Peace. JL |

I think in general I would break the tie by "voting" for the poem with no errors...the exception being if the poem with the error affected me the most. Of course, I've made errors too...embarassing as hell!!! Yeah, I too make errors. And I passed English cum laude! At times, the printer's devil, with his bag of typos, manages to get a fly into the ointment, or a fly in the soup in the best of restaurants, , , no matter how diligent you may be. Fortunately, such errors can be rectified. We ought not to make a storm in a teacup or a mountain out of a molehill with regards to tiny typos, Simply, advise the poet, or worse, ignore the typo...............................lol |

Your my buddy on this site, so don't take this wrong, but I don't think spelling and grammer is necessary to win all contests. When I rate others poems for the OP weekly contest, where rating is what matters, I take it down a notch if I see grammer and spelling errors, which I won't fuss if done in return to me, although it sucks when someone slips a nine in. But I do try not to rate on topic or wether I disagree with the poets ideas, because that's not fair to the individual. As for the contests, I think it's about getting your writing noticed above all else, and not necessarily about winning. I can say this only because I did not win! So know your writings are enjoyed and were a pleasure for all to read [/quote You are on the ball, Charlie. I agree with you.] |

A JOKE ON TIES AND TYPOS I dreamt that a tie is God' humorous Intervention, As he views a contest from heaven's pavilion, For the Devil to unloosen the knot. Man gets in a muddle for what is not. So know your writings are enjoyed and were a pleasure for all to read Thank you cousinoren! I personally think people need to keep in mind the two contests on this site are completely separate from each other. One is run by the OP, the other is not! I do agree with some here that you do not want spelling and grammatical errors within the OP Anthology Book. If they allowed poems in that included such errors, it is unlikely the book would sell. As for Poetry Survivor contest it's more about the status quo of a poets awesomeness. So that being said, SBear has every reason to be about 2nd place. I also was very then about only going a week, cuz I think most everyone takes pride in their work. That being said, I intend to post a poem later this morning, entitled, "The People". I have thoroughly checked my work for spelling and grammar, and it looks very good to me. So if you do not find any errors when reading this poem, then please allow it to go to the end of the contest, so the judges can check it out. Thanks. A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.
Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
