How Can We All Get Caught In Print? A Must Read!

NewsPaper WebSites Need Money, Are We The Key?

What Are They Going To Do With All The Printing Machines?

Can Poets Save The Newspaper Industry?

We Are The Poets of the 21st Century!

I will be adding to this as much as I can.

They definitely need something new and fresh. The newspaper's biggest mistake was not moving to the internet in the first place. Their second mistake was to not give away the paper for free to everyone in their coverage area. Had they done those, they could have boosted the amount of ad revenue.

Now that they've finally moved to the internet, and are cutting home delivery and things like that, they need to find new ways to beef up their offering. Not just have a paper in the form of a web site.

I could see something like Poetry contributing to this. I'm sure some papers cover events that include poetry, but maybe there needs to be more focus?

Re: How Can We All Get Caught In Print? A Must Read!

i'm afraid, boys, that the newspaper is dead ...
even if online content could include poetry,
or a poetry section, certainly ...
the newspaper ... is just an old form ... even when it's online ... and i don't know that the audience is really right for poetry ...

i went thru some writhing over this ... 6 months ago ... feeling the local newspaper is important, and wanting to "save" it ... but BEYOND POOR BUSINESS DECISIONS (well summarized, Papa) ... the daily traditionals also have been cutting back their investigative reporting budgets, steadily, for approximately 30 years ... the best, most reliable news NO LONGER comes from the daily trads ... they HAVE NOT invested in the beats that made the newspaper worthwhile ... the people who knew what questions to ask of whom HAVE HAD TO FIND OTHER EMPLOYERS, online or otherwise ... therefore, i just really don't think the daily newspaper is worth any outside effort to "save" ... and, in fact, is truly a mostly-submerged ship already ...

WEEKLIES, however ... might be convinced ... and, at least in my area, offer the best, most timely local news and opinion ... AND THEY ACTUALLY GET READ ... and are a nice mix of arts, opinion, happenings, and news.

The Inlander (my local weekly) runs an annual short story contest ... i'll investigate and/or put a bug in someone's ear about an annual poetry contest smile maybe they already had one and i missed it, lol smile

i LOVE the article you posted, Word ... there's much food for thought there ... and exciting news, that there have been some big players in the business of poetry within the last few years ... very good information ...

and it still brings me back to ... the chapbook smile ... as perhaps the best print avenue ...
*OP is the audience most likely to be interested in modern poetry (certainly a higher percentage than a daily newspaper readership)
*By making chapbooks available, we encourage deeper appreciation of the work by fans, and
*We give fans the opportunity to easily share what they're reading with others ... "Here, have I read this one to you yet? This is one of my favorite poems from one of my favorite poets on OP ..."
*By distributing electronic files of the poetry, we vastly increase the opportunities for distribution even other than print
*Sales of chapbook files could be easily trackable, and popular authors may have better luck getting "officially published" if they can show this kind of track record to a publisher ... for goodness' sake ... if it only takes 30 sales to make one a Best Seller of verse, we could all be best sellers within the week! smile
*Getting more modern poetry out into the world increases exposure, increases interest, increases accessibility ... which creates more poetry ... which creates more interest ...

PLUS smile i agree with the Time author ... that poetry went through such a snobbish phase ... that it's no wonder the published poetry world has become a wasteland of academics ... not all, certainly ... Robert Wrigley, Reign of Snakes, is one of my favorite modern authors, totally accessible, beautiful book ... but who's heard of him?

i think the general population expects to be bored by poetry ... chapbooks ... might be that breath of fresh air ... that could spark a populist movement ...

Re: How Can We All Get Caught In Print? A Must Read!

holy cats ... that's interesting ...
i guess i'm saying ...
if we make the work available,
we can let the people decide ...

and then you don't have to decide
if you're haunting the reader
or haunting the writer, lol

i think this is where poetry publishing has gone awry ... people who don't enter into conversation with other real people ... making the publishing decisions ... based on a standard developed 100 years ago ... you know, when newspapers WERE the words by, for, and of the people ...

and if the site owner could make a percentage of every chapbook sold ... why would they care, if it's "good" or "bad"?

that IS infuriating ...

holy cats ...

and, i hear ya on the machines ... i've come up with a couple of half-baked schemes over the last 6 months ... nothing worth sharing yet ...

BTW ... it's not just the newspaper printers ...

printers all over the country are going out of business, no idea what they're going to do with all this huge outdated equipment ...

everything's gone digital ... really has changed everything ...

your nemisis is nothing but a monument to short-sighted isgnoance carved from a solid block of hindsight-bias.

What was Poe? For a good part of his life he was a dirt poor drunkard with the worst luck in the world who ws kicked out of West Point. He sold "the Raven" for $13 (not much in our money either). He went out much the same way.

Dickinson ( now heralded as a heroine of American literature) was as "unknown" as one can get, and would have been should her wishes have been granted.

Van Gough never sold a painting (maybe one) while he lived.

What was every giant of literature before they got lucky (for success in art is more a matter of chance and luck than talent)? unknown.

what were gorillas before white men "verified" them? myths, nothing more than tribal lore.

All true poetry has something to offer. I will reluctantly agree that not all online unknown poetry is magnificant and worthy for a publishing deal, but on this medium it is a valuable asset. Anyone who thinks as he does really has lost touch with Poetic Reality and the facet of Art inplace of commercial value.

Let us Arise! Riot! Revive! We are the 21st Century Poets of OP. If the 20th century taught us anything, it is that poetry and music are the subconcious, concious, and conscience of culture, and people united in culture can do anything. In 50 years: from gliders to the moon.

Re: How Can We All Get Caught In Print? A Must Read!

In addition to just putting poetry in the paper, maybe use it to connect local poets, artists, musicians, and writers. That way everyone can share, mix, connect, and develop in little circles and comunities.

they in turn could publish their own paper or something. I think that way poets can connect while turing on more people.
anyone dig?

Every poet and citizen who appreciates the art has an opportunity and obligation as well to assist. The newspapers depend upon its readers. Share your voices of concern so that the press realizes that we the poets of originalpoetry.com are not alone in their desire to see poetry in the news again. You can do so by contacting your local poetry editor and requesting a poetry article be developed, or, if you're creatively (and financially inclined) start a poetry column of your own from your own small newspaper press.

Let the voice of the people be heard in the art of poetry and thrive once again in the newspapers!

I followed this link. Thanks for the enlightenment. Can you carefully examine the feasibility of entrusting to Writers Literary Agency, our JOINT ANTHOLOGY, to sell it for us, as soon as we have finished compiling the manuscript?

I feel there is a catch somewhere, I trust that you may find the time to discover if it is to our advantage to use their aervice.

With Lulu, we have to do our own marketing or pay a fee to them in advance, for them to market for us.

Re: How Can We All Get Caught In Print? A Must Read!

funny, a friend of mine, when she saw my collection of "chapbooks," called them "zines"! smile

so i guess it's all a matter of perspective, whatever you call it ...

cousinsoren ... the commercial advantage ... i guess to me it's more than that ... it's:
(1) incentive to put one's work in a cohesive, edited-to-the-best-of-your-ability format
(2) a chance for other poets to be able to print the work and read offline
(3) because of offline reading and availability, incentive/ability to share the work with people in real time ... i often share poetry in my house, but it's usually limited to offline authors ... rumi, ts eliot, zen haiku, krishnamurti, parabola, local work, my own work ... i'd like to be able to more easily extend that reading to offline audiences
(4) if i'm printing someone's online work, i would like clear permission to do so ... and a formatted, cohesive, easily print-into-a-chapbook format is appealing to me ... and if i purchase the work, or even download from an authorized place, i'd feel better about it
(5) interest in an author's chapbooks could lead to publishing interest or leverage, if that is what one desires
(6) a series of chapbooks could be bound into a hard copy book that one could publish under an ISBN ... and would create a larger work that would have had careful, baby steps along the way, chapters, to be put together as the work evolves

so ... those are all reasons to make work available in a simple, text-only, chapbook format ...

beyond that ... if you put all the work into making the work available, and someone wanted to purchase the work, that just seems like a natural, full circle of abundance, easily completed ...

plus smile smile smile if an author wanted to deliver customized, individualized, visual-art-filled books, they could arrange that separately with individuals ... but the plain chapbook format could get such a conversation started ...

luv to all! happy halloween! hope you're somewhere being inspired by the moon!

Re: How Can We All Get Caught In Print? A Must Read!

I know it's been talked about before, but as a step towards the "chapbooks" ( a GREAT idea, btw) we could give poets the option of organizing their poems into collections or volumes. This would make a poet's work more accsessible, as we all know: there is only so much room in the margin "poet's other poems" thing, and some recent work is left out...

and as that gets popular, each collection could be offered in a printable version, like a chapbook.

groovy?

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
