    Down the Drain

Circling my mind like water down the drain
    The agony from your words
    The dull throbbing pain
    The shame that I feel
    Just for feeling at all
    The pain, it's all real
and I feel cold as I fall
I'm just numb and I'm lost
I thought you were my light.
    I'm just bitter and cross
    My day's turned to night
    How could you! I couldn't,
    I wouldn't say THAT
and now you hold me so limply
as you take it all back
    But I'm empty and desperate
my heart hangs by a thread
And my eyes are just searching
    for the horizon ahead
    How cold will it be?
    How alone will I feel?
How dare you promise me tomorrow
    with words that aren't real
Or was it the hatred you spewed
were those the lies that you told?
just to hurt me and break me
    and watch me unfold?
In that case, how dare you
    cut me so deep
with our dreams as your weapon
    and promises you can't keep!
    I was angry before
    now I'm hateful and dead
and your words just keep circling
    like voltures in my head
    They feed on my fears
    and pick at what's left
of the growth through the years
that has now turned to death.
and my blood now runs cold
    for the angel I love
    the Angel I thought
    had been sent from above
to guide me and lead me
    through life hand in hand
    and forever our souls
    together would stand
but your words they just circle
and my heart, it just cries
and I replay all the anger
    as tears fill my eyes
and I reach for your hand
but it's black and it's cold
and I look into your eyes
and see the lies that you've told
    no more do I see
    that beautiful man
    no more do I long
    for your sweet guiding hand
    no more will I cry
for your love through this pain
my blood for you runs cold
    like water down the drain

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
