DAREDEVIL LOVER GIRL!

Poem Commentary

Because I love life as much as Evel Knievel loved the idea of jumping the Grand Canyon

DAREDEVIL LOVER GIRL!

She blamed the whole affair on Evel Knievel
The way that he plunged right into
The Grand Canyon
Willing to shatter
Like a broken kewpie doll
With the over-played drone of his Hot-rod
Engine, Roaring out the ancient songs
Of road warriors and rewriting sacred
Kamikaze vows
to become a trivial question
Worshipped by crash test dummies
Who die again and again
In the shotgun seats of smashed cars

You have a very unique style which is quite refreshing. Write on.

Thank you Hampton. I always thought I was a little bit of a chameleon. I have some concrete poems that I haven't posted yet that are more like paintings. I have narrative stuff and then I even once wrote a free verse sonnet... I call it my one and only sad sonnet.

The ne plus ultra of the American dream: Walk right up to death and spit square in his eye ha ha... the trick is getting away with it : )

I just love the idea of Evel! What a wonderful guy... I mean he knew that he might not make it- and that it might be his life... and with everyone watching he tried and failed.... but he will remain indelibly alive for those in the know. It didn't kill his spirit. I guess I put this here because someone asked me about writing poetry once.

I read this again because it is so friggn'--cool.. blame it all on Evel...

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
