Afraid of the Dark
are you afraid of the dark
I have since I was a child
things can leave their mark
when you've been defiled
no going down basements
or closets or attics
too many debasements
but worst of which afflicts
is for any child to know
of love's abandonments
where did my father go
why no more Christmas presents
then, others came with love
and they showed me just how much
things I shouldn't have learned of
things from a grownup's touch
I'd hide under my bed
alone, dark and cold
wishing I were dead
wishing I were old
wishing upon a star
a picture of vulnerability
as all of us really are
aren't we?
