Poem Commentary

This poem was written on my deployment.

A SOLDIERS WORK IS NEVER DONE

SILENCE IT’S ALL AROUND.
THE NIGHT AIR STILL.
NOT A SOUND.
THE HEAT OF THE DAY STILL LINGERS NEAR.
THE NOISE OF THE DAY QUITEN AS THE SUN SETS.
THE NIGHT CREATURES BEGIN TO MOVE ABOUT.
THE SOLDIERS OF THE NIGHT RISE TO THE CALL.
CARRYING OUT THEIR DUTIES ONE AND ALL.
THE ALARM SOUNDS AS THEY INVADE THE NIGHT LEAVING FEAR IN THE MINDS OF EVERYONE IN THEIR SIGHTS.
THEY STAND STRONG AND HARD AND AT THE END OF THEIR SHIFT THEY SETTLE DOWN TO RECHARGE.
A SOLDIERS WORK IS NEVER DONE.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
