    When My Silence Speaks

i saw something beautiful the other day
and it made me think of you.
but i don't have the words to describe it.
perhaps if i knew another language
or could place my memories in your head,
    you would understand
    what words cannot express
and what language can only hide.

i saw something precious the other day,
but verbs and nouns would only shatter
    this fragile thing,
so i hold it close to my heart,
wishing i could share it with you,
    hoping you will understand
    what keeps me silent
    when you are near me.

A poem begins as a lump in the throat, a sense of wrong, a homesickness, a lovesickness. It finds the thought and the thought finds the words.

    Robert Frost (1875-1963) American Poet.
