This River I Cry

This River I Cry

In the dusty mire

of half forgotten dreams,

in tear filled streams

of unfulfilled desires.

I swim towards reason

in the muddied river of time,

flowing onward

to the sea of eternity.

Whirlpools and waterfalls

currents and undertows,

seeking my drowning

the death of my will.

I swim or sink,

surf or drown,

onward, onward

through pain and storm.

There seems no rest

no tranquil shore,

no meaning to anything.

Just this river

that I cry,

I must forever swim.

~haunting where is spellcheck when you need it?

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
