The Truth of Things

The Truth of Things

If I could become all I desired,
the world would resonate with my songs.
I would dance the samba
and play the violin
while flirting in a dozen languages
at my stage debut...
but the world is not mine
for the taking.
I can only claim my little piece
and expand outward slowly...
so as not to arouse contempt.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
